Southeast Stevia Development Project Gains Momentum in Umuahia Meeting

In a groundbreaking meeting held at Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria, on Thursday, February 29, 2024, the Southeast Stevia Development Project saw a significant turnout of farmers from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states.

The convener, Dr. Paul E. Ugwu, noted that the prevailing sentiment was the commitment to fostering development in the Southeast through love and institutional discipline.

Twelve points key agreements and discussions arrived at by the meeting include

1. Establishment of WhatsApp groups in each Southeast state and a zonal group for leaders.
2. Farmers to register with a fee of #5000 at the time of booking stevia seedlings.
3. Urgent booking of stevia seedlings due to the impending rainy season.
4. Quarterly zonal meetings to be conducted.
5. Commitment to expedite the stevia project's implementation in the region.
6. Launching a door-to-door campaign to promote stevia farming among cooperatives and other farmer unions.
7. Registration of Southeast stevia farmers with the Nigerian Stevia Farmers Association for export benefits.
8. Prohibition of the use of inorganic fertilizer or manure for stevia cultivation.
9. Emphasis on teamwork to achieve common goals.
10. Objective to eliminate the use of chemical sugar in the Southeast by 2027.
11. States to individually procure equipment for stevia cultivation and processing.
12. Target for each state to have a functional automated stevia processing plant by 2028.

Additionally, the participants agreed to organize the Southeast Stevia Investment Summit every six months to enhance awareness and boost revenue.
