Churches can boost food production in Nigeria - Oluwatomi Olatoye

It is no longer news that the state of food insecurity in Nigeria is getting worse as the days go by. From insufficient supply of foodstuff to increasing prices with no sign of recovery, it is obvious that action must be taken now to rescue Nigeria.

As the Nigerian government has not been able to fully tackle this issue, a body that could take on this task is the Church. Considering the reach, size, financial capability and influence in the nation, churches have what it takes to fight food insecurity in Nigeria. Some projects that churches could embark on include:

1. Land clearing

This is a major factor in food production and has proven to be a hard task for upcoming farmers. Big churches can buy tractors and organize schemes to make them available for farmers or even donate to  local governments in Nigeria. There are 774 local governments in Nigeria. Each can be equipped with a tractor.

 2. Buy back programs.

There are several inputs which when provided for farmers, can go a long way. Examples are seeds, seedlings, organic fertilizers, chicks, catfish fingerlings, etc. Churches could supply these inputs to farmers and create buy back arrangements (inputs are provided and the harvested produce are bought from the farmers).

 3. Church branch farms:

Various church branches could be mobilized to set up and maintain a farm which would belong to each branch.

 4. Value addition Program :

Supporting Small businesses with equipment and tools. Either free or giving out some and beneficiaries pay back over time as the case may be.

5. Community Development:

Churches can build communities by allowing a substantial percentage of income in a local assembly to stay in the community and be used for projects like borehole, Irrigation systems for farms, etc.

6. Massive Campaign on Home Farms -Over the years, our organization has been actively involved in training Nigerians on establishing their own home farms. The OBE and F.A.I.T.H initiative were introduced, resulting in the training of over 5000 individuals. We remain committed to collaborating with churches to equip their members with food production skills. Get in touch with us today to learn more.

It is important to note that actions, not just words, must be carried out. The best time for the church to shine is now!!!

  1. This is achievable if churches are willing.

  2. The church in Nigeria has the capacity to do this and more if they will drop their clout of competition and work in unity.
The church makes more money than the government.

The church in Nigeria has more people paying tithe to it every month than those paying taxes to government. If all of the ways listed in this article can be employed by the church with the tithe they receive, food will be available, affordable and accessible, numerous jobs (direct and indirect) will be created and crime will reduce.

  3. This is actually a great article which will help the nation at large. The security challenge is another thing we need to consider but it can be sorted out.

  4. As good as the writer's suggestion may appear, the writer is obviously not a farmer or is not in touch with the realities that led to this much talked about food insecurity.
    1. Of what use is your tractor if you are kidnapped while ploughing your farm?
    2. Of what use is your land clearing of herdsmen should come and camp on the cleared land the following day.
    3. Of what use are your fertiliser and feed when the cost of produce is beyond the reach of the citizenry as a result of inflation and loss of purchasing power?
    4. Has cattle ever fed on your farmland? I know of farm settlements in Editions, Ebony and Kaduna where people were bankrupt to the tune of hundreds of millions of naira because cows grazed on their lands. I am a victim.
Solve the national security problems of banditry and kidnapping , food insecurity will vanish. I am speaking from experience.
